Learning sight words are the key to reading. Sight words can also be referred to as High Frequency Words (HFW). These words are found often in sentences and by knowing these words, reading becomes easier. Most of the sight words can not be sounded out, however, some of them can. I teach my students to learn to recognize them without trying to sound them out. There are plenty of other words in the sentence and the book that they will be sounding out.
The goal is to know all 40 sight words by the end of kindergarten. Here is a quick list: I, can, the, we, see, a, like, at, in, to, it, and, go, you, do, my, as, are, with, he, is, little, she, was, for, have, of, they, said, want, Here, me, this, what, help, too, has, play, where, look, good, who, come, does.
I have a list of the sight words on my Google Classroom as well. If you click on any sight word assignment it will have a link attached. The link provides interactive activities to help build recognition of the word.
